Carnegie Hill is the NYC neighborhood with the largest contingent of museums (Museum Mile), having more museums in one area than any other part of the Northeast. The area’s two mansions have garnered national recognition (Andrew Carnegie Mansion and Otto H. Kahn House), and there’s a well-known school (Dalton School) that is credited with creating a new wave of educational practices. Carnegie Hill is home to endless mansions that once housed some of the richest people in the nation. Many of those mansions have been transformed into museums – Cooper-Hewitt, and National Design Museum come to mind. The area is dotted with brownstones and historic homes and landmarks. Carnegie Hill begins at 86th Street to the south and extends to 96th Street to the north. The area hovers on 5th Avenue (Central Park) to the west and concludes at Lexington Avenue to the east.
